When Milo is not Milo

A Tri-Nations favourite

In South Africa, there’s an unusual drink made from malt wheat called Milo. It’s produced and distributed by the Nestlé company as an energy drink powder that can be served either cold or hot. It’s available in Australia and New Zealand as well, and is just as popular there as it is here. It’s marketed for children and athletes as the perfect drink for non-damaging energy and is well-known to fill any cravings one may have pretty quickly.

Milo is distinctive for its flavour and texture. It’s not chocolate nor is it bland malt. It’s not a fine powder but is more like a chunky and coarse dry mixture.

  1. The photo above is from Saudi Arabia; the container says its produced in South Africa but the contents is just bitter cocoa! No malt and no chunky bits. One unhappy expat 🙁
